My children and I listened to and enjoyed Jungle Doctor and the Whirlwind this week. We enjoy reading biographies and missionary stories together, and these books had come highly recommended. The storyline is interesting and the reader is pleasant to listen to. We enjoyed getting to know Dr. Paul and learning about his work, as well as the other people he worked with in Tanzania. The children especially enjoyed the part when Bwana shined the truck lights on Maradadi and caught him ….
I received this audiobook as a part of the christianaudio Reviewer Program in exchange for my honest review.
When unexpected situations arise that appear unjust, irrational, or even dreadful, we feel confused and frustrated. And before long, we begin to doubt God’s concern for us or His control over our lives. Adversity is hard to endure and can even be harder to understand. If God were really in control, why would He allow the tragic auto accident or crucial job loss? How could He permit cancer in a loved one or the death of a child?
Grappling with His concern for us we ask, “Why is God allowing this?” or “What have I done wrong?” In an effort to strengthen his own trust in God during a time of adversity, Jerry Bridges began a lengthy Bible study on the topic of God’s sovereignty. What he learned changed his life, and he now shares the fruit of that study with you in Trusting God.
by J.I. Packer and read by Simon Vance
A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian’s existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the “gigantic conspiracy of misdirection” by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word.
God is Great! God is Good! Though in the midst of suffering some may doubt that. But our Sovereign Omnipotent Father sees the end from the beginning, and knows what we do not, and works all things for good to those who are the called and love Him.
90 Day’s of God’s Goodness: Daily Reflections that Shine Light in Personal Darkness (book or audio) is a typical devotional book of short daily reflections consisting of a Scripture Passage, a true story illustrating its application, and a short prayer. But this devotional is a book of God’s goodness, even through suffering in the lives of His children. It is about the Ultimate Good from the One who sees not just the trial of the moment, but the eternal outcome of it.
I enjoy Randy Alcorn’s writing, and this book was no exception. Hearing of others who have gone through the fire and come out refined is an encouragement to all who walk through any kind of suffering. It also shows how light our suffering may be compared to what others have triumphed through. God indeed is Good! God is Great!
I listened to the audio version of this book, which may prove to be a perfect format for a daily devotional for some as they get ready for the day. If you are looking for a daily devotional that will strengthen your faith, this is a good one.
This month christianaudio is offering a Special free audiobook, in addition to their regular monthly free book. Holiness of God, by R.C. Sproul is the regular free audiobook for March. (Click to get it if you haven’t yet.)Jesus: the Only Way to God, by John Piper, is being offered Free from today until the end of the month also.
This may seem like a simple topic, and it is the only one Piper deals with in this book, but it is no doubt one that needs to be covered in Truth. It’s a short book, only 2.5 hours on audio. I just downloaded it, and am looking forward to listening.
If the evangelical church at large was ever too confrontational in its evangelism, those days are gone. In our shrinking, pluralistic world, the belief that Jesus is the only way of salvation is increasingly called arrogant and even hateful. In the face of this criticism, many shrink back from affirming the global necessity of knowing and believing in Jesus. In Jesus, the Only Way to God, John Piper offers a timely plea for the evangelical church to consider what is at stake in surrendering the unique, universal place of Jesus in salvation.

The Holiness of Godby R.C. Sproul is the March Free Audiobook Download of the Month at christianaudio. I love this classic on God’s character and have both the audiobook offered here for free, and the print book.
What is the holiness of God? Are you intrigued by it, or are you terrified? R.C. Sproul clearly identifies this attribute of God and all the associations one may make with it. This absolutely will inform and radically cause a re-thinking of one’s view of God.
“The material in this book drove me to my knees and dramatically challenged my Christian life. Written by one of the most brilliant thinkers of our day, it is absolutely urgent reading for every Christian.” – Author Chuck Colson
From Rudolf Otto’s mysterium tremendum to Martin Luther’s “insanity” and Jonathan Edwards’s fiery sermons, Sproul’s classic offers an accessible exploration of history and Scripture that will help you understand—and live with—the tension between God’s terrifying holiness and his inexplicable grace.Sproul explains, “How we understand the person and character of God the Father affects every aspect of our lives….God is inescapable. There is no place we can hide from Him. Not only does He penetrate every aspect of our lives, but He penetrates it in his majestic holiness. Therefore we must seek to understand what the holy is. We dare not seek to avoid it. There can be no worship, no spiritual growth, no true obedience without it. It defines our goal as Christians. God has declared, “Be holy, because I am holy” (Lev. 11:44). To reach that goal, we must understand what holiness is.”
Allow one of the all-time classic works on God’s character to guide you more deeply into the presence of God as you respond to God’s holiness. This edition of Sproul’s work includes challenging study questions for individuals or small groups.
Recently I listened to the audiobook of one of John Piper’s newest books, Think! I always enjoy Piper, because he always causes me to Think!
This short, easy to read or listen to book encourages us to love God with our mind. Many books on this topic get pretty weighty. This one does not, but still covers the topic well, and causes you to Think. While Piper definitely gets the point across that we are to use our minds and think, his focus is clear that this isn’t about a “head knowledge” only “intellectual” Christianity. But he clearly and scripturally refutes an anti-intellectual Christianity also – and relativism too. Our purpose is to study God’s Word diligently to know God better to be able to love and glorify Him better, and show His love better to others. We need both disciplined study of the Word, and to trust God to teach us through His Holy Spirit.
Piper, as always, calls us to the deep – to deep love of our great God. The narrator of this audiobook, Wayne Shepherd, does a fine job.
I am catching up on my book reviews, now that my writing projects are out of the way. Today’s review is on the classic by Jerry Bridges, The Pursuit of Holiness. I did this review on the audio version of this book, but I also have the print version and a Bible Study based on it. I recommend all three.
It’s not only God’s will for us to be holy but also His command. We cannot just sit back and wait for God to sanctify us, but we must actively pursue putting off our sin. And although we are blessed with the outcome of victory in our own lives by this, even more important is that our obedience brings glory to God. This book is full of practical examples, AND practical applications for many areas we can walk in obedience by pursuing holiness.
This classic is short and easy to read or listen to.
